Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? Hebrews 2:1-4).

We first learned of our salvation from sin and death, our deliverance from the corruption of the world and the influence of demonic forces by the words and actions of our Lord Jesus. He spoke the words of salvation and he demonstrated the reality of what he spoke by what He did. This great salvation was confirmed to us by the Apostles and other disciples who were eye-witnesses to the incredible things that Jesus did. But they didn’t just tell the story of what Jesus did. They also did the things that Jesus did, by the power of the Holy Spirit. God provided a witness to these who proclaimed the gospel with signs and wonders and miracles. These second generation believers who never saw Jesus believed, in part, because of the testimony of miracles that followed the first generation disciples.

In addition to the outer testimony of signs and wonders, the Holy Spirit distributed spiritual gifts to those who believed. Through these gifts, the power of God provided an inner testimony to those who experienced the power of God through healing and deliverance, through prophetic words,

through words of wisdom and words of knowledge as the followers of Christ demonstrated his love miraculously. This was the pattern of evangelism in the earliest days of the church; proclamation and demonstration.
